Orexo AB confirmed ProStrakan Group's announcement of the UK Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency's (MHRA) issuance of marketing authorization for Abstral, a breakthrough cancer pain drug.

Orexo, as a result of the authorization will receive a milestone payment of USD 1 million, and ProStrakan will complete UK pricing negotiations and launch planning by the end of this year, earlier than expected, and resulting in a full year’s revenue in 2009. Orexo has a license agreement with ProStrakan for exclusive rights to Abstral (formerly sold as Rapinyl), a fast-dissolving sub-lingual fentanyl tablet intended for the management of breakthrough cancer pain in patients who are already receiving opioid analgesics, in Europe and North America.

Over five million people are estimated to have cancer in Europe many of which suffer resultant pain, including breakthrough cancer pain, brief and often severe flares of pain experienced by cancer patients despite pain relief medicine. It is known as breakthrough pain because it is pain that "breaks through" a regular pain medicine schedule.
